Erstens: Die Tests sind Scheiße.
Zweitens: Mehr Studenten heißt mehr Profit.
Drittens: Das sind Unis, denen ansonsten die Studenten weggelaufen sind, weil ihre Ausbildung nichts wert war.
Für die letzte Interpretation spricht dieser Datenpunkt:

Liberal Arts Colleges ist inzwischen sowas wie ein Zerrbild-Kampfbegriff geworden. Das sind die Schneeflocken-Unis, wo man feminist dance therapy und andere "grievance studies" studiert. Liberal Arts Colleges sind das Ziel von Hoax-Papers.
